Do I really need an annual gynecological exam?

An annual gynecologic exam is an important routine checkup to ensure that you’re healthy inside and out. Your CWH annual exam is among the most important things you can do for your wellness and peace of mind. The well visit can help detect certain health problems, diagnose needed treatment, as well as prevent future illnesses. Your annual exam is a critical part of health and wellness through every stage of your life.

What to expect

What to expect at your annual gynecological exam:

Whatever your age, an annual GYN exam generally includes:

  • An assessment of your current health status

  • A breast exam to check for lumps, skin changes or nipple discharge

  • A pelvic exam to check your vulva, vagina, cervix, uterus, ovaries, rectum and pelvis

  • A Pap test to screen for cervical cancer (A Pap smear may or may not be recommended annually, depending upon your specific situation)

Your annual exam also includes information on vaccines that are recommended based on age and risk factors. Comprehensive Women’s Health offers patients TDAP and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines.

Your provider may also refer you for your regular mammogram as part of your annual exam.

Testing for sexually transmitted infections may be recommended for sexually active adolescents and women.

A mammogram is an x-ray screening of your breasts that can help detect tissue changes.  The American Cancer Society recommends that most women begin regular mammogram screenings beginning at age 40, but this is ultimately an informed decision to be made between you and your provider.  Regular mammograms are an effective tool for early breast cancer detection.  Early detection can significantly improve the survival rate of breast cancer.

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy

What is BHRT?

BHRT an acronym which stands for bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. Hormone replacement therapy has been a common practice to cope with aging for decades. BHRT can also help women who have always suffered from unbalanced hormones feel like themselves for the first time. Bio-identical hormones are naturally derived from plant sources and closely replicate the molecular structure of human hormones.

What is female hormone replacement therapy?

Female hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can take the form of patches, creams, pills or pellets. These treatments and therapies contain estradiol, progestin and testosterone. When hormones are out of balance, hormone replacement therapy can help with many different symptoms including emotional symptoms, reproductive symptoms and non-reproductive symptoms.

Symptoms of hormone imbalance:

  • Fatigue

  • Night sweats

  • Mood swings

  • Irritability

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Hot flashes or flushes

  • Weight gain

  • Decreased sex drive

You may benefit from BHRT if you have any of the following:

  • Menopause

  • Hysterectomy

  • Metabolic syndrome

  • Thyroid syndrome

  • Osteoporosis

  • Family history of Alzheimer's Disease

  • Heart Disease

  • Diabetes

  • Family history of Parkinson's Disease

When is hormone replacement therapy most beneficial for women?

Hormone replacement therapy can help anyone whose hormones are out of balance at any time. However, the most common time women seek out hormone replacement therapy is when they’re experiencing menopause. There are three stages to menopause—perimenopause, menopause and post menopause. There are also circumstances in which a woman has never experienced balanced hormones, as evidenced by excessively painful menstrual cycles and extreme mood swings.

What can I expect from BHRT?

While everyone’s results are different, the process for considering, getting, monitoring and continuing with BHRT is typically the same with all our patients. Your first appointment with your certified BioTE provider will include hormone testing. The next appointment will be to review your tests, after which you will be able to possibly begin therapy.
